Only four oil paintings by Käthe Kollwitz are known to have been preserved.
Here, whilst studying at the Academy for Women Artists in Munich, where she was taught by Ludwig Herterich (1856–1932), she portrays her cousin Else Rupp (1873–1920), who was around 17 years old at the time, as a aspiring painter.
This work reveals Kollwitz’s great talent for portraiture. She captures the young woman’s delicate nature with great sensitivity. The subdued colour palette hints at the influence of Ludwig Herterich.
