In 2002, a completely revised edition of the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s graphic works by August Klipstein was published as a collaboration between the Kollwitz Museum Köln and the Kornfeld Gallery in Berne. This catalogue is still the authoritative publication on Kollwitz research.
This two-volume catalogue of the artist’s 275 graphic works lists the early prints individually and is the first to give a detailed and precise description of proofs and editions. A comprehensive explanatory section examines all the themes relevant to the graphic works.

In 1903 Max Lehrs published the first catalogue of Käthe Kollwitz’ graphic art listing 50 works, most of them from the collection of the Dresden Print Room. In 1913, the second catalogue of the artist’s graphic works was published by Johannes Sievers and commissioned by the art dealer Emil Richter. It comprised 122 works. In 1939, August Klipstein began work on a revised edition of the previous publications. His catalogue raisonné of Kollwitz’ graphic art was complemented by Eberhard W. Kornfeld, Hans Bollinger and others after Klipstein’s death in 1951 and published in 1955.
A good 60 years after this publication and after the first Kollwitz museums were founded in Cologne and Berlin, Kollwitz experts highlighted the urgent need for a revision of this most recent catalogue raisonné. As a collaborative project involving the major public collections in Cologne, Dresden and Berlin, private collectors, art dealers, experts in printing techniques and printing paper experts, an authoritative catalogue on the artist’s graphic work was published – the completely revised edition of August Klipstein’s catalogue raisonné in two volumes by Alexandra von dem Knesebeck.
Thus, a new, solid basis for research work was created, thanks to the generous financial support of the Kreissparkasse Köln, the savings bank behind the Kollwitz Museum Köln.
