Visit

The photograph shows the modern, light-coloured façade of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum on Cologne’s bustling Neumarkt, from which long vertical banners featuring the theme of the current special exhibition hang. In the background, the striking grey towers of the Romanesque Basilica of St Apostles rise into the blue sky behind the green treetops.

In the brightly lit exhibition rooms of the Kollwitz Museum in Cologne, an art educator uses sweeping hand gestures to explain Käthe Kollwitz’s famous anti-war poster “Never Again War” to two visitors who are listening intently. The artwork takes center stage, featuring an expressive black-and-white charcoal drawing of a person passionately demanding “Never Again War” with her mouth wide open and her hand raised in a vow.

This photograph by Christian Nitz shows Käthe Kollwitz’s Memorial »Grieving Parents«, which is situated in the open interior of the ruins of the Old St Alban’s Church in Cologne. Amidst the weathered brick walls, two life-size, block-like stone figures kneel facing each other in silent grief: on the left, the father stands motionless, his gaze fixed straight ahead and his arms crossed tightly across his chest, whilst on the right, the mother, deeply bowed and lost in her own thoughts, mourns their son.

Kollwitz in Cologne

Although Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) visited the cathedral city of Cologne only a few times in person, the work of the Berlin-based artist is firmly anchored in the cityscape.
