Käthe Kollwitz spent the final months of her life at the Rüdenhof in Moritzburg, near Dresden. There she died on 22 April 1945. The building was restored in accordance with heritage conservation principles on the initiative of the Kreissparkasse Köln, the organisation operating the Kollwitz Museum Köln. The German Foundation for Monument Protection, the Free State of Saxony and the municipality of Moritzburg were all involved. Since 1995, the memorial site has been open to the public as the Käthe Kollwitz House.
