The uniform her elder son Hans is wearing and the caption »on leave« suggest that this work can be dated back to the first few war years.
The artist used an existing self-portrait and complemented it in a smaller image section with a portrait of Hans on leave from the front. At that time, her younger son Peter had already fallen.
This was the first time that she expressed this desire to be portrayed together with one of her beloved children – with the exception of works where her sons were used as models for particular themes.
