The large-format lithograph »Working-class Woman with sleeping Boy« was created in 1927 as an edition for the Künstler-Selbsthilfe, a publishing firm founded in Berlin in 1927 whose profits were used to support artists who were struggling financially. Members of the publisher’s committee included Max Liebermann, Thomas Mann and the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim.

This motif was also used as the title page of the first edition of Kunst der Zeit, the magazine of the Künstler-Selbsthilfe that was published from 1929 onwards. Title-page contributions for this magazine came from Käthe Kollwitz, Heinrich Zille, Max Pechstein, August Gaul and other artists.
